Cookie Policy

This is how we use cookies on softrock.co.nz. Short version: necessary cookies only by default, opt-in analytics, and affiliate-network cookies set when you click a casino link.

A note before you read

This cookie policy has been drafted as a starting template by SoftRock NZ's editorial team and should be reviewed by a New Zealand-qualified lawyer before being relied on. It describes our intended cookie use in plain English.

A cookie is a small text file a website asks your browser to store on your device. The next time you visit, the site reads the cookie back and uses what's inside it to do something — remember you said yes to a consent prompt, count you as a returning visitor, or attribute a sale to the website that referred you. Cookies cannot run code on your device, read other files, or see anything outside what the site itself put there. Some cookies last a single browser session; others stick around for days, months or years until they expire or you delete them.

Cookie categories we use

We group cookies into four categories. Only the first category is on by default. Everything else is either opt-in or set by a third party when you choose to follow one of our links.

Strictly necessary

These cookies keep the site functional. Disabling them is either impossible (your browser stops the site from working) or makes core features fail. We use the minimum number needed.

  • Cookie: softrock_consent · Purpose: remembers your consent choice for analytics so we don't ask on every page · Expiry: 12 months · Can be disabled: no (disabling breaks the consent flow) · Set by: SoftRock NZ.

Performance / analytics (opt-in)

Anonymised visitor analytics. Off by default. Only loaded if you opt in via the consent banner. We use this to understand which pages are useful and which need rewriting.

  • Cookie: provider-specific (e.g. _pa for Plausible) · Purpose: measures aggregate page views, session duration, region · Expiry: session to 12 months depending on provider · Can be disabled: yes — withdraw consent in the cookie settings link in the footer, or block via your browser · Set by: our analytics provider.

Functional (opt-in)

Cookies that remember preferences such as dark/light mode. We currently only ship the site in dark mode, so no functional cookies are in use today. This category is listed for transparency in case we add a light-mode toggle later.

Affiliate tracking (third-party)

These are not set by SoftRock NZ. When you click a link from this site to a recommended casino, the destination operator or its affiliate network sets a cookie on your browser. We do not control these cookies, we cannot read them, and we cannot delete them on your behalf — only the operator or its network can.

  • Cookie: network-specific (varies by operator and affiliate platform) · Purpose: attributes any subsequent signup at the operator back to SoftRock NZ so we are paid the commission · Expiry: typically 30 to 90 days · Can be disabled: yes — block third-party cookies in your browser, or click through to the operator in a private/incognito window · Set by: the destination casino or its affiliate network.

How to manage cookies in your browser

You can review, block and delete cookies from inside your browser at any time. The exact path varies — here are the three browsers most Kiwi readers use.

  • Chrome (desktop): three-dot menu (top right) → Settings → Privacy and security → Cookies and other site data → Manage on-device site data. From here you can search for softrock.co.nz, delete its cookies, or block cookies for any site. On Android the path is similar: three-dot menu → Settings → Privacy and security → Cookies.
  • Safari (macOS): Safari menu (top left of the screen) → Settings (or Preferences on older versions) → Privacy → Manage Website Data…. Search for softrock.co.nz and remove. To block cookies generally, tick "Block all cookies" on the same screen — beware, this breaks many sites including bank logins.
  • Firefox: three-line menu (top right) → Settings → Privacy & Security → Cookies and Site Data → Manage Data…. From here you can clear cookies for individual sites or all sites. Firefox also has an "Enhanced Tracking Protection" toggle that blocks third-party tracking cookies by default — leave it on.

Two things to know before you block cookies globally:

  • Blocking all cookies will break parts of this site and most other sites you use. Logins, shopping carts and consent banners all rely on cookies of some kind. We recommend blocking only third-party cookies, not all cookies.
  • Blocking third-party cookies will prevent affiliate-network attribution. If you have third-party cookies blocked when you click through to a casino, the operator's affiliate network will not be able to attribute your signup to SoftRock NZ, and we will not earn commission on the referral. We don't penalise you for it — your reading experience, the bonus you get, and the operator's signup process are all unaffected.

Affiliate cookie disclosure

SoftRock NZ is reader-supported. When you click a link from this site to a recommended casino, the destination casino or its affiliate network sets a cookie on your browser. If you sign up at that casino while the cookie is still active and you make a deposit, the affiliate network attributes the signup to SoftRock NZ and pays us a commission. This is how the site is funded.

A few important points about how this works:

  • The cookie does not identify you personally to us. We see aggregate attribution only — counts of clicks, signups and net activity per source. We never see your name, your operator account, your deposits, your wagers, your balance or your withdrawals.
  • The cookie typically lasts 30 to 90 days, depending on the affiliate network.
  • You can sign up at any operator without using our link and the experience for you is identical. If you do, we simply earn no commission on that referral. There is no impact on your bonus, your account or the operator's treatment of you.
  • We disclose this affiliate relationship on every casino card, on the about page, in the footer of every page, and in our Terms & Conditions.

Do Not Track

"Do Not Track" (DNT) is a legacy browser header that signals you don't want to be tracked. Browser support for DNT has wound down over the years, but where we detect it we honour it: if your browser sends DNT, we do not load analytics on your visit, even if you have previously opted in via our consent banner. We treat the live browser signal as the more recent expression of your preference.

Changes to this policy

We may update this policy from time to time. Material changes will be flagged at the top of this page for at least 30 days. The effective date at the top of the page reflects the current version.
